The official currency of the Faroe Islands is the Faroese Krona. The currency is minted by the Danish National Bank. The currency is a version of the Danish Krona. The Faroese Krona is further divided into 100 oyru. In 1940 the banknotes in circulation were of the following denominations 5, 20, 50, 100 and 500 kroner notes. These notes were specifically stamped with ‘ Gyldig paa Færøerne, Færø Amt, Juni 1940’ which translated means ‘only valid on the Faroe Islands, Faroe County, June 1940″). Later in 1941 new banknotes were issued in the following denominations 1, 5, 10 and 100 kroner. The 50 kroner note was minted and issued in 1967. In 1978 the 500 and 1000 kroner banknotes were minted and issued.
In 2001, the new Faroese Krona banknotes that were issued had high-tech security features incorporated into them. Current Faroese banknotes current denominations are 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 krona.
