In 1901 the National Bank of Greece decided to mint paper banknotes to the value of 1000 drachma with the 5000 drachma banknote being issued in 1928. In the years that followed the Greek government also issued notes in denominations ranging from 50 lepta to 20 drachma. In 2002 the official currency for Greece changed to the Euro.
