It was in 1844 when the lira first made its appearance as a gold coin. Soon after paper money was introduced by the Imperial Ottoman Bank with denominations ranging from 5 to 5000 kurus. However, in the mid 1870s the lira was the prominent currency and had denominations of 5 to 1000 liras. To overcome the problem of small money denominations of 1 and 2.5 kurus the 50,000 lira banknote was introduced. The old Turkish lira issued by the Imperial Ottoman Bank was replaced with new denomination bank notes of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 lira. Due to inflation being so bad in Turkey on January 1 2005, the New Turkish Lira was born. In 2009 this simply became the Turkish lira.
